Help Us Reclaim Our Woods

Every Sunday, November 1, 2026 through January 31, 2027
11:00 AM–2:00 PM
New England Woods
Weekly work location will vary

Pull on your boots, grab a pair of gloves and join your neighbors for our recurring Sunday Invasive Plant Removal Workdays.

Throughout the fall and winter, we’ll be working in priority areas around New England Woods to remove invasive plants that are crowding out native vegetation, climbing mature trees and degrading woodland habitat.

Depending on the location and season, our targets may include:

• English ivy
• Oriental bittersweet
• Porcelainberry
• Amur honeysuckle
• Multiflora rose
• Wineberry
• Wisteria
• Other invasive vines and shrubs

No Experience Necessary

New volunteers are always welcome.

Before work begins, we’ll review the day’s target plants, demonstrate safe removal techniques and explain what should stay put. If you can tell a vine from a tree, you’re already off to a promising start. If not, we can help with that too.

Work ranges from light hand pulling and vine cutting to more strenuous brush removal, so volunteers can choose tasks appropriate to their comfort and ability.

What to Wear

• Long pants
• Long sleeves
• Sturdy boots or closed toe shoes
• Work gloves
• Weather appropriate layers
• A hat

What to Bring

• Water
• Hand pruners or clippers
• Loppers
• Hand saw, if you have one

We’ll have some tools available, so don’t let a lack of equipment keep you home.

Safety First

Please watch for poison ivy, uneven ground, thorns and ticks. Volunteers will receive a brief safety orientation before beginning work.

Afterward, we recommend washing work clothes, showering and checking carefully for ticks.

Children are welcome when accompanied and supervised by an adult, although some work areas and activities may be better suited to older children and adults.

Where Are We Working This Week?

Because we’ll move between different priority areas throughout the neighborhood, the weekly meeting location and target area will be announced in advance by email, Facebook and on the New England Woods website.

Come for an hour or stay for all three.

Every vine cut and every invasive plant removed gives our native trees, shrubs and wildflowers a little more room to breathe.

Many hands really do make lighter work — especially when those hands are carrying loppers.
